Eugene Onegin (Евгений Онегин) stands as a jewel of Russian musical heritage and a brilliant example of lyrical opera, based on the verse novel by Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin. The story follows Eugene Onegin, a young man weary of social life, who leaves the city and meets the young Tatyana in the countryside. She instantly falls in love with him and confesses her feelings in a heartfelt letter filled with romantic ideals, but Onegin rejects her. Years later, he realizes his mistake, but Tatyana, now married to Prince Gremin and reconciled with life’s realities, no longer returns his feelings. Tchaikovsky’s music elevates Pushkin’s tale with deep emotional resonance and some of the most compelling character development in opera. Full of dramatic twists, the opera premiered on March 29, 1879, in Moscow, with its Czech premiere taking place on December 6, 1888, under the composer’s own direction. The arias from this work are among the most celebrated in the operatic repertoire. Performed in Russian with Czech and German surtitles, the opera is preceded by a dramaturgical introduction 20 minutes before the performance in the foyer of the Šalda Theatre.
