Adaptation of the famous French love novel in letters.

The best-known adaptation of the famous French novel in letters by Choderlos de Laclos, Dangerous Liaisons (1782) depicts with irresistible lightness and elegance the love games of the decadent Rococo nobility just before the great French Revolution. In the affluent society, days and nights revolve around unbridled pleasure - and the relationships of the novel's two main characters, the famous seducer, the Vicomte de Valmont, and his intimate friend, the Marquise de Merteuil, are also limited to erotic pleasures. Their wager, which sets the whole plot in motion, seems to be a frivolous play with feelings: that Valmont will seduce the unapproachable and pious Madame de Tourvel. Beneath the brilliant conversation, sparkling gunfights and fluffy rococo feathers, however, a cynical power struggle rages and the wounded woman's desire for revenge storms. And can such a bet ever be won? What are we playing with when we fake fatal love? How can the seasoned Valmont face true feelings, especially his own? A play about the fear of love, pain and adulthood is still as provocative today. Jakub Čermák is an unmissable director with a distinctive view of the world, and his extraordinary theatrical imagery promises a generous spectacle.

Interesting trivia for film buffs: Stephen Frears's 1988 Oscar-winning film of the same name, starring John Malkovich and other Hollywood stars, was based on Hampton's dramatisation, while Miloš Forman's Valmont, starring Colin Firth, was made a year later from a more alternative screenplay by Jean-Claude Carrière and won four French Césars against the older film's three Oscars.
